Weightlifting belts in Algeria: which one to pick?

"Weightlifting belt" covers two very different objects that do not do the same job. This page explains which one matches your training, how to size it, and what it costs in Algeria.

The short answer

If you lift heavy — squat, deadlift, overhead press, row — get a leather belt of uniform width, 10 cm all the way around. It is the only shape your abdominal wall can actually push against, and it works both in the gym and on the platform.

If what you want is passive lower-back support — long hours standing, warmth, mild discomfort — a neoprene or nylon belt, wide at the back, does that job and costs less. It does not replace the first one on a heavy set.

The confusion comes from the word itself: in Algeria, "ceinture de musculation", "ceinture de force" and "powerlifting belt" usually name the same need — holding the trunk under a loaded bar. The leather belt is the one that answers it.

Why uniform width is the whole point

A belt does not brace your back from the outside like a splint. It gives your abdomen something to push against: you breathe in, you brace, pressure rises inside the abdomen, and that pressure is what stiffens the trunk. The mechanism is called intra-abdominal pressure.

A belt that narrows at the front gives you nothing to push against exactly where the abdomen pushes hardest. It is comfortable and it keeps the lower back warm, but it takes no part in the mechanism. That is why uniform 10 cm width is the standard across strength sports — and it is also the maximum width allowed in competition under the IPF technical rules.

Which thickness: 10 mm or 13 mm?

10 mm covers general training. It supports firmly and stays supple enough to wear through a whole session, accessories included. For a first belt, it is the choice you do not regret.

13 mm is for maximal loads and competition. Stiffer, it returns more pressure on heavy squat and deadlift attempts, but it takes a few sessions to break in and is worn set by set. It is also the maximum thickness admitted in competition — above it, the belt is rejected at equipment check.

Sizing

Belt size is not trouser size: it matches the waist measured exactly where the belt sits, above the iliac crest and below the ribs. Measure standing, relaxed, without pulling the tape tight.

Frequently asked questions

Does a weightlifting belt actually do anything?

On heavy whole-body lifts — squat, deadlift, overhead press, row — yes: it gives the abdomen a surface to push against and stiffens the trunk. On isolation work (curls, calves, cable work) it adds nothing.

Should the belt be worn for the whole session?

No. It goes on for heavy sets and is loosened between them. Wearing it constantly, warm-ups and accessories included, adds no support and stops the abdominal wall from working on its own.

Velcro or lever buckle?

Velcro is quick but gives way progressively under high pressure, and wears out. A lever closes on a fixed notch: tension is identical on every set and does not move under load. Fine adjustment is done once, by moving the lever with a screwdriver.

What belt width should I choose?

10 cm all the way around. It is the width that gives the abdomen the largest surface to push against, and it is the maximum width allowed in competition under the IPF technical rules.

Can a gym belt be used in a powerlifting competition?

Only if it meets the equipment specifications: leather or suede, 10 cm maximum width, 13 mm maximum thickness, lever or prong closure. Nylon velcro belts are not compliant.
